Deep Black Online
Sci-fi third-person shooter dives into free-to-play waters.

Developer Biart Studio announced today that an MMO version of its sci-fi third-person shooter Deep Black is currently in the works. Dubbed Deep Black Online, the F2P game is scheduled to enter beta testing in Q4 2012. That’s more than a year away. But those interested can get an early taste of the aquatic shooter by getting the retail version of the game, which is coming to the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC this summer.

Tribes Ascend
:Hi-Rez’s new multiplayer shooter is F2P and it’s coming this fall.

Another Tribes game is going free-to-play, and this time it’s Tribes: Ascend. Hi-Rez has released a new trailer showcasing Tribes: Ascend’s first in-game footage, while announcing that the game is going free-to-play.

Hellgate
The gates of hell open next Thursday.

For those who missed Hellgate’s closed beta on June 3, you’ll be happy to know that the game’s open beta is coming very soon. T3 Entertainment announced that the open beta for Hellgate will launch on June 30, opening its doors to the public and bringing in two new game modes – the PvP Duel Area and the zombie-infested Cow Room.

TF2
Valve makes its debut in the free-to-play market with Team Fortress 2.

Valve’s critically acclaimed multiplayer shooter is now free-to-play. The free-to-play update came bundled with TF2′s “Über Update”, which is, according to Valve, the “largest content pack delivered to TF2 since it shipped in 2007.” Everyone can now download and play the game for free, and those who bought the game prior to the update or have spent money in the Mann Co. store are automatically upgraded to premium member status.

Arma 2 Free
Military sim now free-to-play.

A few weeks earlier, Bohemia Interactive announced that Arma 2 would go free-to-play. Today, the company launched Arma 2: Free’s public beta and released the beta client in a lightweight 960MB package.

World of Planes
World of Planes Alpha arrives in July, Beta in September.

Gaijin Entertainment will kick off World of Planes’ alpha test in July and the closed beta test in September, the company has confirmed. Announced back in April, World of Planes is a World War II flight simulator MMO that features hundreds of warplanes, detailed models, a career mode and more.

Fallen Earth
Post-apocalyptic MMOFPS gets a F2P makeover.

We all knew, but now it’s official. Joystiq’s Massively team first broke the news about the F2P transition on June 15, and today, GamersFirst put out a press release formally announcing its plans to transition Fallen Earth to a F2P model.

Arma 2
Military simulator to go F2P this month. Cash shop not included.

Bohemia Interactive, following in EA and Ubisoft’s footsteps, has announced Arma 2: Free, a free-to-play version of the acclaimed tactical shooter Arma 2. Originally released back in 2009, Arma 2 is a military sim set in the fictional former Soviet state of Chernarus. If you’re not familiar with the Arma series, think Battlefield 2, except with larger maps, more strategy, and greater realism.

DUST 514
CCP’s latest MMO lands on the PS3.

EVE Online developer CCP announced recently that its upcoming MMO shooter Dust 514 is due out summer 2012 and will be a PS3 exclusive. The game’s business model, according to CCP’s press release, is a “departure from the traditional subscription or one-time purchase model,” and will be “supported by revenues from the in-game sale of virtual goods.”
